When the keys are played in SILENT mode, the hammers are stopped just before they strike the strings, so the piano itself produces no sound. Sensors installed beneath the keys detect how the keys are played and transmit the data to the digital tone generator, which produces sampled sounds that can be heard through a pair of headphones. The second is the Imperial from Bösendorfer, a long-established Viennese piano brand with a passionate following. The Imperial is known for its rich tonal variety and its natural, warm feel. Yamaha faithfully reproduces the unique characteristics of these concert grand pianos by carefully recording the full tonal range of each of the 88 keys, making meticulous adjustments to capture the most harmonious sounds each piano has to offer. These two world-renowned concert grand pianos are joined by a long list of other voices. Binaural sampling recreates the ambience and the full, natural resonance of acoustic pianos*, giving pianists the feeling of sitting in front of a grand piano. Binaural sampling is a sampling method in which special microphones are placed on the head of a mannequin in the same positions as a pianist’s ears to capture the piano’s sounds as they are experienced in reality. Sounds based on binaural sampling offer such a natural experience that pianists forget they’re wearing headphones, no matter how long they keep playing. On these pianos, binaural sampling has been used for the Bösendorfer Imperial as well as the Yamaha CFX.
